TROOPERS SAY THE DRIVER, 17 YEAR OLD ARMANDO ORTIZ, DIED AT THE SCENE. TROOPERS SAY EXCESSIVE SPEED WAS A CONTRIBUTING FACTOR IN THE CRASH. THE ROADWAY WAS CLOSED FOR APPROXIMATELY TWO HOURS WHILE AUTHORITIES INVESTIGATED. IN VIRGINIA, GREENSBORO POLICE HAVE CONFIRMED THAT THE SUSPECT IN A SHOOTING ON I-85 WAS THE SAME PERSON WHO SHOT TWO CARROLL COUNTY DEPUTIES. POLICE SAY IT INVOLVED 29 YEAR OLD EDMOND JOHNSON AND ANOTHE TRACTOR TRAILER DRIVER. NOW, ACCORDING TO THE DEPARTMENT, JOHNSON THEN WENT TO CARROLL COUNTY, VIRGINIA, WHERE TWO DEPUTIES FOUND JOHNSON’S VEHICLE AT THE LOVE’S TRAVEL STOP IN LAMBSBURG. THAT’S WHERE A SHOOTING TOOK PLACE, AND JOHNSON WAS KILLED. NOW, HENRY COUNTY OFFICIALS SAY NON-LIFE THREATENING INJURIES. THE VICTIM IN GREENSBORO SHOOTING IS ALSO EXPECTED TO RECOVER. A BURN BAN REMAINS IN EFFECT ACROSS THE CAROLINAS AS CREWS CONTINUE WORKING TO GET MULTIPLE WILDFIRES UNDER CONTROL. IN POLK COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA, CREWS FROM 14 STATES ARE WORKING TO CONTAIN TWO FIRES THAT HAVE BURNED OVER 7000 ACRES COMBINED. THE BLACK COVE FIRE IS 35% CONTAINED, AND THE DEEP WOODS FIRE IS 32% CONTAINED. AT LAST CHECK. IN SOUTH CAROLINA, THE TABLE ROCK COMPLEX FIRE HAS BURNED OVER 10,000 ACRES ACROSS BOTH STATES. OFFICIALS SAY THAT FIRE IS 9% CONTAINED. FIRE CREWS ARE RELYING ON A FEW TOOLS TO ASSIST THEIR EFFORTS. NOW, THAT INCLUDES FIRE RETARDANT MATERIALS DROPPED IN FROM AN AIRCRAFT. THAT’S THE PINK POWDER YOU MAY HAVE SEEN DROPPED OVER THE AREA ON YOUR SCREEN. IT’S A MIXTURE OF WATER, FERTILIZER AND IRON OXIDE, WHICH GIVES IT THE PINK HUE. IT’S USED SO CREWS CAN MARK AREAS THAT HAVE ALREADY BEEN TREATED. THICKENERS LIKE CLAY ARE ALSO ADDED TO HELP KEEP THE MIXTURE FROM BLOWING OFF TARGET. THEIR FIRE RETARDANT CHEMICALS. A SIMILAR TYPE THAT YOU WOULD HAVE IN, YOU KNOW, YOUR FIRE EXTINGUISHER IN THE IN YOUR HOME. AND YOU KNOW THOSE ARE BIODEGRADABLE IN GENERAL, FAIRLY FAIRLY QUICKLY. AND THERE’S A THERE’S A PROTOCOL FOR USING THOSE THAT THEY FOLLOW. AND SO IN THESE SITUATIONS IT’S CERTAINLY USED TO TRY TO TO TO CONTROL THE FIRES. On Tuesday, Gov. Josh Stein declared a state of emergency to expand the state's capacity to respond to the wildfires burning in western North Carolina.
Statewide Ban on Open Burning: Effective 8 a.m. Friday, March 21, a ban on all open burning was issued statewide. All burning permits are canceled. No new permits are being issued. The ban remains in effect until further notice.
There is also a temporary flight restriction in place at an altitude from the surface up to 5,500 feet until further notice. Firefighting aircraft that respond to wildfires fly low in support of ground personnel. Drones can pose a serious threat to pilot safety, public safety and could also put firefighters, residents and property at risk of loss to wildfire.
